At Saint Joseph Hospital, caring for our community extends far beyond the walls of the hospital. This year, our associates came together in an extraordinary way to support local families through the “Pack the Pantry” Departmental Food Drive Competition, organized by Kevin Rodriguez, Clinical Dietitian.

Kevin led the initiative with one goal in mind: to boost the inventory of the hospital’s Micro Pantry in time for the new school year, when many families face added expenses and food insecurity. Thanks to his leadership and the generosity of our staff, the pantry is once again full and ready to serve neighbors in need.

A Pantry with Purpose

The Saint Joseph Hospital – Elgin Micro Pantry was established in 2020 as a simple yet powerful idea: a free-standing “kitchen cabinet” located near the hospital’s Main Entrance. Fully enclosed to withstand the weather, it provides a dignified and accessible way for anyone in the community to receive food. The pantry operates under a guiding theme:

“Take what you need. Leave what you can.”

Since its creation, the Micro Pantry has become a lifeline for countless individuals and families. While the impact is difficult to measure in exact numbers, it is estimated to provide the equivalent of 200 meals per month to the Elgin community.

Associates Making a Difference

The “Pack the Pantry” food drive highlighted the creativity and compassion of Saint Joseph associates, who competed across departments to collect non-perishable food items. From canned goods to shelf-stable snacks, the donations poured in and reflected the spirit of teamwork and service that defines our hospital family.

For Kevin Rodriguez, the effort was both professional and personal. As a dietitian, he sees firsthand how access to nutritious food influences overall health. By organizing the food drive, he wanted to ensure that the Micro Pantry would continue meeting needs at a critical time of year.

A Community Invitation

While our associates gave generously, the Micro Pantry thrives because of ongoing community support. We warmly invite our neighbors to join us in this mission by donating shelf-stable, non-perishable foods. Donations can be placed directly in the pantry, dropped off at the Main Lobby desk, or delivered to the designated location in the Hospital Dining Room.

At Saint Joseph Hospital – Elgin, we are proud of our associates for living out our mission in such tangible ways, and we remain committed to addressing both the medical and social needs of our community.
