Comprehensive Rehabilitation Care at Saint Joseph Hospital

We’re committed to helping our patients recover with dignity, expertise, and compassion. Our multidisciplinary team offers personalized care plans delivered through physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech-language pathology. We offer a full team of acute care and outpatient therapists who are on service to provide you with the treatment you need including those recovering from neurological conditions, orthopedic injuries, cancer treatments, and more.

Inpatient Rehabilitation

About Comprehensive Rehabilitation Center (CRC)

Located within the hospital, CRC offers 24-hour rehabilitation-focused nursing care and daily oversight by a physician specializing in physical medicine and rehabilitation.

Therapy treatment delivery will include at least two of the following disciplines, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Speech Therapy. The intensity of these services is determined as part of the individualized plan of care and will typically include a combination of 30- to 60-minute therapy sessions for three hours per day at least 5 of 7 days per week.

Our 40-bed unit offers specialized programs for stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury, neurological conditions, amputation, orthopedic conditions, and trauma. Each patient receives a tailored plan of care focused on restoring function, promoting independence, and preparing for a safe return home.

Our team includes physical, occupational, and speech therapists, along with rehabilitation nurses, social workers, dietitians, and clinical specialists.

What you should bring?

  • Clothing: We recommend you bring at least one week’s supply of washable, loose-fitting clothes.
    • Pants or shorts
    • Shirts/blouses
    • Underwear
    • Socks or slippers with non-slip soles
    • Jacket or sweater
    • Pajamas/robes
  • One pair of comfortable walking shoes or shoes with non-slip grip.
  • Hearing aids with batteries and case
  • Eyeglasses or contact lens and case
  • Toiletries
  • A list of all medications you were taking at home
    • Most medications will be supplied by the Rehabilitation Unit as ordered by your physician.
    • If there is a medication that we are unable to provide, we may ask that you bring your supply from home. All medications will be administered and documented by your nurse.

What types of inpatient rehabilitative care is offered?

Neurological Rehabilitation

  • Designed for individuals recovering from injuries or conditions affecting the brain, spinal cord, or nerves. Common diagnoses include Parkinson’s disease, Multiple sclerosis, Guillain-Barre syndrome, Myopathy, Muscular dystrophy, Neuromuscular disorders and more.
  • Goals include improving balance, movement, swallowing, memory, and communication to help patients return to daily life.

Stroke Rehabilitation

Our intensive inpatient program helps individuals regain function following a stroke through coordinated, evidence-based therapy. Focus areas include:

  • Mobility and Balance
  • Activities of Daily Living
  • Swallowing and Communication
  • Emotional Support and Caregiver Education
  • & More

Our team follows the American Stroke Association’s best practices to deliver high-quality, interdisciplinary care.

Brain Injury Rehabilitation

We provide comprehensive care for patients with traumatic or acquired brain injuries. Services are tailored to:

  • Restore cognitive function and memory
  • Improve physical coordination and balance
  • Manage emotional and behavioral changes
  • Support family and caregiver involvement

Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation

  • Whether traumatic or non-traumatic, our spinal cord program helps patients regain mobility and confidence. Therapy includes strength and range of motion training, assistive technology training, bladder and bowel management, psychosocial and caregiver support.
  • Our goal is to promote long-term wellness and independence.

Amputation Rehabilitation

We support patients through both pre- and post-prosthetic training. Our services include:

  • Wound healing and limb care
  • Mobility and gait training
  • Activities of daily living
  • Emotional and psychological adjustment

Our multidisciplinary team works with prosthetists and families to create an effective recovery plan.

Orthopedic Rehabilitation

  • Ideal for patients recovering from joint replacement, fractures, or complex orthopedic surgery. We focus on gait and stair training, muscle strengthening, joint mobility, fall prevention and home safety and more.

  • We aim to reduce pain, improve movement, and restore independence.

Cancer Care

 Our therapists provide expert rehabilitation before, during, and after cancer treatment. Whether you’re undergoing surgery, radiation, or chemotherapy, we offer physical and occupational therapy focused on:

  • Range of motion and strength restoration
  • Lymphedema management
  • Scar tissue and post-operative pain treatment
  • Cardiovascular exercise guidance during treatment
  • Education on safe movement and infection prevention

Lymphedema Therapy

Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation

1. Pelvic pain, urine leakage, and constipation can be very bothersome, embarrassing, and negatively impact your quality of life. Our rehabilitation team can provide discreet, expert care related to pelvic health to improve your quality of life and return you to a full and active lifestyle.

2. Pelvic floor rehabilitation aids in relieving pain and restoring function to muscles and joints of the pelvic area. This program consists of a team of therapists who have specialized training in pelvic floor muscle disorders for both women and men. They work together to develop a treatment plan tailored to your needs. A wide variety of treatment options are available to restore this source of inner strength for patients including:

  • Pelvic floor muscle exercise and retaining
  • Manual therapy, joint mobilization, and myofascial manipulation
  • Biofeedback
  • Electrical stimulation
  • Pain management
  • Therapeutic exercise, strengthening, and core stabilization
  • Sport-specific strengthening and training

The Independence Lab: Intensive Outpatient Neuro-Rehabilitation

The Independence Lab provides a higher level of outpatient rehab for individuals recovering from stroke, traumatic brain injury, or significant functional decline.

Features of this program include:

  • Interdisciplinary approach with physical, occupational, and speech therapy
  • 2–3 hours of therapy per day, up to 5 days/week
  • One-on-one treatment sessions
  • Functional goal-setting and progress tracking
  • Community reintegration activities: cooking, cleaning, laundry, gardening

This program serves patients who are medically stable but need intensive support to return to their highest level of independence.
